3 Days in Porto: Family Fun

Day 1: Historic Porto and Riverside Adventures
Explore Porto's historic center through some of its most iconic landmarks before ending the day with spectacular views over the Douro River.
Morning
Begin the day with a pastel de nata (egg custard tart) and the exploration of São Bento Station, where families can admire the enormous blue-and-white azulejo panels depicting scenes from Portuguese history and daily life. Continue along Rua das Flores, a lively pedestrian street lined with historic buildings, cafés, artisan shops, and balconies draped with flowers.
Visit Livraria Lello, one of the world's most famous bookstores. Its ornate staircase, stained-glass skylight, and storybook atmosphere make it a memorable stop for both children and adults. Nearby, stop at Igreja do Carmo, known for its striking azulejo-covered side façade.
Next, climb the Clérigos Tower for panoramic views across Porto's rooftops, church spires, and the Douro River. Due to the tower’s steep staircase, families with young kids might consider taking in panoramic views from Miradouro da Vitória instead.
Afternoon
Enjoy lunch in the historic center before visiting the Porto Cathedral, or Sé do Porto. Explore its cloisters, admire the architecture, and take in the views from the cathedral grounds. Requirements for respectful/modest attire apply at churches, synagogues, and other religious sites. Visitors should avoid disrupting religious observances and remain mindful of posted customs.
Descend through the historic streets toward Ribeira, Porto's colorful riverside district. Wander the narrow lanes, watch the boats on the river, and enjoy the lively atmosphere along the waterfront.
Optional add-on: Explore the Monument Church of St Francis, or Church of São Francisco, known for its richly gilded Baroque interior with intricate woodcarvings and its catacombs.
Late Afternoon/Evening
Cross the upper level of the Dom Luís I Bridge for spectacular views of the city and river. Continue to Jardim do Morro, a popular viewpoint overlooking Porto's skyline.
Take the cable car down into Vila Nova de Gaia for additional views of the river and historic center before enjoying dinner along the waterfront.
Day 2: Vibrant Markets, Gardens, and Museums
Combine outdoor exploration with interactive experiences and contemporary art.
Morning
Begin the day at Mercado do Bolhão, Porto’s historic market, where vendors sell fresh produce, seafood, cheeses, pastries, and regional specialties. While exploring the market area, sample bolinhos de bacalhau (salt cod fritters), a popular traditional snack.
Then take a Douro river cruise to gain a different perspective on the city. The standard cruise passes under all six of Porto’s bridges.
Afternoon
Visit the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art for contemporary art, extensive gardens, wooded paths, ponds, sculptures, and open green spaces.
Optional add-on: Spend time at the nearby Jardins do Palácio de Cristal, where landscaped gardens, peacocks, sculptures, and scenic viewpoints provide a relaxing break.
Evening
Attend the Spiritus Multimedia Show at Clérigos Church to experience Baroque architecture with animations, lasers, and atmospheric music. Then have dinner and a walk in Ribeira for nighttime views of the illuminated bridges and riverfront buildings.
Day 3: Azulejos Traditions and Coastal Scenery
Experience Porto's traditional crafts before enjoying a day by the ocean.
Morning
Participate in an azulejo painting workshop to learn about Portugal's famous decorative tiles while creating designs to take home as souvenirs. Families with teenagers might consider Gazete Azulejos, which is run by local artists and supports urban tile preservation, while families with younger kids might consider Domus Arte 1, a concept store and cultural hub that supports local artisans, since it has a lower age limit on its workshops.
Alternate Morning Plan for Young Kids
Head to the World of Discoveries, an interactive museum and boat ride experience that introduces visitors to Portugal's Age of Exploration through multimedia exhibits and recreated historical settings.
Afternoon
Optional add-on: Travel to Matosinhos Sul, a coastal community renowned for its seafood restaurants. Enjoy a grilled fish lunch along Rua Heróis de França, where many restaurants display fresh catches of the day before cooking them over charcoal grills.
Enjoy a ride on one of Porto's historic trams along the Douro River to Passeio Alegre in Foz do Douro, where the Douro River meets the Atlantic Ocean. The vintage tramcars can provide memorable way to experience the city's historic waterfront. Spend time at one of the area's beaches, enjoying the seaside atmosphere, ocean views, and waterfront promenade.
Evening
Take a final stroll along the coast, visit the nearby Felgueiras Lighthouse, and enjoy a waterfront dinner in Foz do Douro while watching the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean.
