Experience two of Milan’s passions: exceptional food and world-renowned fashion. From bustling food halls to luxury boutiques and atmospheric evening streets, discover how the city blends culinary tradition with contemporary style.

This itinerary is designed to begin on a Friday.

Morning

Begin the day at Mercato Centrale Milano, a modern food hall located inside the historic Centrale railway station. Start with a classic Italian breakfast of cappuccino or espresso paired with a brioche (Italian croissant), then spend time browsing the market’s food stalls. Vendors showcase regional cheeses, cured meats, pastries, fresh pasta, and other specialties from across Italy.

Optional add-on: Visit Eataly Milano Smeraldo, a large food marketplace featuring regional Italian products, specialty ingredients, wine selections, and casual dining options.

Late Morning/Afternoon

Head to the Quadrilatero della Moda, Milan’s renowned fashion district. Follow a route along Via Monte Napoleone, Via della Spiga, Via Manzoni, and Via Borgospesso, where flagship boutiques and designer showrooms represent many of Italy’s most influential fashion houses.

Continue to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, an elegant nineteenth-century shopping arcade known for its soaring glass dome, mosaic floors, luxury boutiques, and historic cafés. Look for the mosaic bull on the floor, where many visitors participate in the local tradition of spinning on its heel for good luck.

Evening

Optional add-on: Enjoy a drink on La Rinascente Rooftop, where there are views of the Duomo and the surrounding neighborhood.

Continue to Brera to browse independent boutiques featuring Italian leather goods, artisan stationery, home décor, and contemporary design objects that reflect Milan's role as Italy's design capital. The neighborhood also has some specialty food shops and traditional salumerias selling cured meats, cheeses, and gourmet products.

Stay in in the neighborhood for dinner and consider sampling two of Milan’s most iconic dishes: ossobuco (braised veal shank) and risotto alla Milanese (saffron risotto).

Day 2: Open-Air Markets and Gourmet Shopping

Explore Milan’s lively markets and specialty food shops before ending the day in the city’s most famous district for aperitivo and evening dining. The open-air markets included are only open on Saturdays.

Morning

Visit Fiera di Sinigaglia, one of Milan’s most popular markets. Originally established as a flea market, it now features a mix of vintage clothing, antiques, accessories, collectibles, records, and eclectic curiosities.

Those more interested in food and designer goods should consider visiting the Via Fauché Market, or Mercato sabato via fauché banco di Luca&Marika, a popular neighborhood market known for fashion stalls, household goods, fresh produce, and local food vendors.

Afternoon

Enjoy lunch featuring cotoletta alla Milanese (breaded veal cutlet).

Spend the remainder of the afternoon exploring the specialty food shops around Via Spadari, one of Milan’s premier gourmet shopping districts. Highlights might include:

  • Marchesi 1824: Historic pastry shop renowned for chocolates, marrons glacés (candied chestnuts), nougat, and elegant packaging; visit the original Via Santa Maria alla Porta location for a more traditional atmosphere.
  • Peck: A famous gourmet food store that offers cheeses, cured meats, wines, chocolates, and specialty products
  • Giusti Boutique: A specialist in traditional balsamic vinegar, featuring products aged for varying lengths of time; visit the Milano Duomo location

Evening

Afternoon

Travel to Turin, a city known for its refined café culture and long-standing chocolate traditions. Begin with a visit to Caffè Al Bicerin, where the city’s signature drink, bicerin (layered espresso, chocolate, and milk/cream), originated.

Continue exploring Turin’s chocolate shops and specialty food stores. Look for gianduja (hazelnut-and-chocolate blend), marrons glacés (candied chestnuts), traditional chocolates and pralines. Highlights might include:

  • Baratti & Milano, a historic chocolatier and café, renowned for elegant pastries and gianduiotti chocolates
  • Caffarel: a pioneer of gianduja and producer of classic Piedmontese chocolates

Late Afternoon/Evening

Spend time in and around Piazza San Carlo, often called Turin’s “drawing room” because of its graceful architecture and sophisticated atmosphere. Enjoy the lively café scene before returning to Milan in the evening.

Day 4: Bologna's Culinary Traditions

Discover Bologna’s rich culinary tradition through its markets, trattorias, and specialty food shops.

Morning

Start with espresso and a small sandwich with mortadella, a simple but iconic local pairing.

Visit Mercato di Mezzo, where vendors offer fresh tagliatelle and tortellini, Parmigiano Reggiano, prosciutto di Parma, and aged balsamic vinegar, highlighting the region’s renowned ingredients.

Afternoon

Enjoy a trattoria lunch featuring tagliatelle al ragù (the real “Bolognese”), tortellini in brodo (tortellini in broth with Parmigiano Reggiano), or lasagne verdi (lasagna with green noodles), each representing traditional Bolognese cuisine.

Browse artisan shops near Piazza Maggiore, where food products, ceramics, and specialty goods reflect the city’s culinary identity.

Late Afternoon/Evening

Explore the Quadrilatero, a historic market area filled with shops selling cheese, cured meats, pasta, and baked goods. Shop for items to take home such as vacuum-packed cured meats, hard cheeses, dry pasta, specialty sauces or spreads, and truffle products (if in season).

Optional add-on: Head to Paolo Atti & Figli Panifico, a historic spot known for its fresh pasta and baked goods. In particular, its fresh tortellini and torta di riso (rice pie) are highly regarded.

Then return to Milan.
