Day 1: Gothic Grandeur and Operatic Elegance

Discover Milan’s most iconic landmarks, from its magnificent cathedral and historic commercial galleries to Renaissance fortifications and one of the world’s most celebrated opera houses.

Morning

Begin the day with a traditional Italian breakfast of cappuccino and a brioche (Italian croissant) at a local café. Then head to the Duomo di Milano, the city’s Gothic masterpiece and one of the largest churches in Europe. Explore the cathedral interior before ascending to the rooftop terraces, where intricate spires, statues, and panoramic views reveal the scale and artistry of the building.

Requirements for respectful/modest attire apply at churches, synagogues, and other religious sites. Visitors should avoid disrupting religious observances and remain mindful of posted customs.

Step into Piazza del Duomo, Milan’s grand central square and the traditional heart of the city. Admire the surrounding architecture and then continue into the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, an elegant nineteenth-century shopping arcade known for its soaring glass dome, mosaic floors, luxury boutiques, and historic cafés. Look for the mosaic bull on the floor, where many visitors participate in the local tradition of spinning on its heel for good luck.

Afternoon

Optional add-on: Explore the Quadrilatero della Moda, Milan’s fashion district. Wander along streets such as Via Monte Napoleone and Via della Spiga, home to luxury boutiques, flagship stores, and some of Italy’s most prestigious fashion houses.

Continue to Castello Sforzesco, a Renaissance fortress that once served as the residence of Milan’s ruling Sforza family. Explore the courtyards, historic defenses, and museum collections. If time permits, enjoy a walk through Parco Sempione, a popular green space located behind the castle with shaded pathways, ponds, and monuments.

Evening

Attend a performance at Teatro alla Scala, one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world. For centuries, La Scala has hosted many of the greatest names in opera, ballet, and classical music.

Evening Plan without a Performance

If a performance is unavailable, reverse the day’s schedule by touring Teatro alla Scala and its museum in the morning and the Duomo di Milano in the late afternoon/evening. The museum explores the history of Italian opera and showcases costumes, instruments, portraits, and memorabilia associated with the theatre’s legendary performers.

Day 2: Renaissance Genius and Artistic Treasures

Explore the legacy of Leonardo da Vinci, Milan’s religious heritage, renowned art collections, and one of the city’s most atmospheric evening districts.

Morning

Begin at Santa Maria delle Grazie, best known as the home of Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, The Last Supper. Advance reservations are essential, as visitor numbers are strictly limited.

Requirements for respectful/modest attire apply at churches, synagogues, and other religious sites. Visitors should avoid disrupting religious observances and remain mindful of posted customs.

Optional add-on: Visit the Leonardo da Vinci National Museum of Science and Technology, where exhibits explore engineering, transportation, communications, and Leonardo’s innovative designs.

Continue to the Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio to see its Romanesque architecture and explore its connection to Saint Ambrose, the city’s patron saint.

Optional add-on: Walk to the nearby Columns of San Lorenzo, one of the city’s best-preserved Roman-era monuments and a popular gathering place.

Afternoon

Head to Brera for lunch. Consider trying risotto Milanese (saffron risotto) or cotoletta alla Milanese (breaded veal cutlet).

Spend time wandering the neighborhood’s narrow streets, art galleries, boutiques, bookstores, and cafés before visiting the Pinacoteca di Brera. The gallery houses Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces, including works by Raphael, Bellini, Caravaggio, and Mantegna.

Evening

Spend the evening in the canal district of Navigli, one of Milan’s most popular destinations for aperitivo. Enjoy drinks beside the canals and sample local specialties such as mondeghili (Milanese meatballs). Consider trying a Negroni Sbagliato (Campari, sweet vermouth, and sparkling wine).

Day 3: Lake Como’s Villages and Alpine Scenery

Escape the city for a day among the elegant lakeside towns, gardens, and mountain views of Lago di Como, or Lake Como.

Morning

Take an early train from Milan to Varenna-Esino Railway Station and continue by ferry to Bellagio, often regarded as the most picturesque town on Lake Como.

Walk to Punta Spartivento, where the lake’s three branches meet and sweeping views extend across the surrounding mountains and waterfront villas.

Continue through the gardens of I Giardini di Villa Melzi, known for their lakeside promenades, sculptures, exotic plants, and peaceful setting.

Afternoon

Spend time exploring central Bellagio, including the famous Salita Serbelloni, lined with boutiques, cafés, and colorful buildings climbing the hillside. Enjoy lunch overlooking the lake.

Optional add-on: Visit a lakeside villa. For easier logistics, return to Varenna and visit Villa Monastero, known for its elegant waterfront gardens.

Or, for those willing to spend additional time on ferries and to shorten their time in Bellagio and Varenna, take the ferry to Lenno to explore Villa del Balbianello, famous for its dramatic setting and appearance in numerous films.

Late Afternoon/Evening

Optional add-on: From Varenna, hike uphill to visit Castello di Vezio for elevated views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

Stroll along Passeggiata degli Innamorati, a scenic lakeside walkway connecting parts of Varenna. Before planning the rest of the evening, check train schedules. If time permits, enjoy aperitivo and/or dinner in Varenna while taking in the relaxed atmosphere before returning to Milan.
